Community life in Aylett, VA
Aylett, Virginia offers a charming rural setting with a sense of community, with a high priority on farming and outdoor recreation. Several local farms sell a wide variety of meat, produce, and artisan products directly to residents. Dreaming Tree Farms offers an interesting take on distributing local produce, offering a “farm-to-salad” weekly subscription service. Dreaming Tree uses their own produce, as well as produce, meat, and cheeses from other local farms, to handcraft a different multi-serving salad each week. The salads are delivered right to your door, providing area residents with the comfort of knowing they’re not only supporting local farms, but they also know exactly where their food is coming from and how it’s treated. Additional opportunities to see how the sausage is made — literally — come with open farm days in the area. Occasionally, the local farms, such as Old Way Farm and Lillian Lee Farm, will allow residents to visit and see how the farms raise their chickens, turkeys, pigs, cows, and lambs, as well as purchase meat, jellies and jams, soaps, and more. You may also see some of these Aylett farms selling their goods at the King William Farmers Market from June through September, as well as other local vendors selling everything from meat to flowers to art.
p>For a more hands-on farm experience, residents can drive to nearby West Point, VA, and check out Riverwatch Farm. While in West Point, you can also visit Mattapony Reserve, a vineyard, winery, restaurant, artifact museum, and local Native American artisan store located off the Mattaponi River at the Mattaponi Indian Reservation. They serve sustainably made wine paired with food sourced from local farms, all while seated overlooking the vineyard and river–and maybe even getting to see some bald eagles and their young, thanks to the eagle habitat nearby.
