Community life in Mechanicsville, VA

Although Mechanicsville is an immediate suburb of Richmond, it is a small town at heart, and locals enjoy gathering for community events each year. Mechanicsville hosts the annual Hanover Tomato Festival, which has become one of the largest day events in Hanover County and a cherished local tradition. The festival is rooted in the community, growing from its first festival to raise money for a new firehouse. Over forty years later, the July event continues to grow each year and features live entertainment, family activities, and of course, tomatoes — both by themselves or in tomato-themed fare. All tomatoes offered at the festival are fresh, delicious, and locally grown in Hanover County. The festival is free to attend, but there is the option to shop with many local businesses and artisans from throughout the county who attend the festival.

Mechanicsville has deep ties with its county (Hanover County) and neighboring communities. Local community groups gather for entertainment and, in some cases, raise money for local student groups or causes. The Hanover County Chamber of Commerce plans and hosts a variety of events to provide support and entertainment for locals. These events range from business mentoring workshops to children’s activities, like Camp Fun Day at Camp Hanover. They also host the annual Airpark 5K, which features a local mascot run in addition to the 5K. Likewise, the Rotary Club of Mechanicsville sponsors an annual Hanover Night at the Diamond, which sends local youth to see the popular minor league baseball team, The Richmond Flying Squirrels, and honors first responders.

Hanover County is also home to Hanover Tavern, a historic tavern dating back to the 18th century. The structure has been home to many different businesses, ranging from an actual tavern to an inn to a courthouse. When the building was run as a tavern, the famous patriot Patrick Henry once assisted his father-in-law, the tavern owner, by entertaining guests. The building has been maintained as a historic site and now serves as the site of a variety of local events. The on-site theater, Bradley Theater, is home to the Virginia Repertory Theatre, a regional professional theater group. The group usually produces 3-4 shows per theatre season and performs plays that cater to a variety of age groups and interests. The tavern is not the only location to enjoy and appreciate history and storytelling in Hanover County. The Hanover County Black Heritage Society features stories and exhibits featuring the contributions of African Americans in the county and includes oral histories from multiple generations.

The town’s approximate 15-minute drive to Richmond makes it easy to enjoy the events hosted by the city as well. One of the most well-known and largely attended is the Richmond Folk Festival, held each October. The three-day festival attracts over 200,000 people from across the nation for a celebration of culture through music, crafts, and culture from around the world. Featured in a PBS documentary, “Sounds of Culture: 20 Years of the Richmond Folk Festival,” the event is widely recognized for the diversity of groups and genres represented. The festival also provides a family area dedicated to children’s activities and educational experiences.

Richmond’s dedication and support of the arts goes beyond the Folk Festival, with film, music, and physical art always in reach. Each year, the city hosts the annual Richmond International Film Festival, which showcases independent cinema from across the globe. Creatives and fans gather to both enjoy great films and learn from each other. The festival includes panel discussions and awards. These festivals are just a couple of examples of Richmond’s arts and cultural events. With murals painted throughout downtown and a thriving arts community, the city is full of opportunities to enjoy the arts.

Each trail has a different activity designation, whether it be hiking, biking, horseback riding, or some combination of the three.
